“…In every life we have some trouble, But when you worry you make it double. DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY…”
This song holds a very special place in my heart. It’s gotten me through many hard times, and it just has that tune that can instantly bring your mood up! I’m sure you have a song like that too. !! Stop what you’re doing, go leave me a comment with your favorite song that always makes you happy !!
When you think about it, humans are just so complex! We love, we hate, we laugh, we cry. So many emotions that we go through–EVERY SINGLE DAY. It’s hard to understand, and it’s hard to figure out why. But when we set aside the problems, and we look at the good in the world, we become aware of how lucky we actually are!
There’s always something good in every day, sometimes you just have to look a little harder.
Let me tell you a little story from when I lived in Charlotte, NC… I remember it so distinctly, and it always seems to humble me when I think about it.
As I was driving home from work, one gloomy Monday, we had tornado watches, wind, and a whole lot of rain! I’ll be honest, I was getting kind of upset. I found myself feeling angry that I had to be out in that mess, and I was being very negative about the situation. Deep down, I knew that I was being dramatic, but it was hard not to. Cold, and rainy just isn’t my style! As I got in my car, and headed home, I noticed the sun peaking out from the clouds. The whole sky went from dark grey to bright golden yellow. I was in awe. So quickly, my mood changed, and everything around me literally lit up. “Golden hour” as it’s called. When I turned the corner, I could see the end of a vibrant rainbow glowing in the distance! You guys, it was STUNNING!! Of course I was trying to keep my eyes on the road, and avoid crashing my car…yet all I wanted to do was pull over and take it all in. (yes I am THAT person who stops on the side of the road to admire the sky) Finally I pulled into the apartment complex, and I could see both ends of the rainbow, and then I realized there was more… Not one, but two full rainbows in the sky! All I could think about was how selfish I had been earlier. Feeling sorry for myself, and acting as though the whole day was ruined over something so small. Soon after the ROYGBIV stripes faded away, the entire sky lit up of orange and pink shades. One of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen! My heart was full again.
Here’s the thing. This day could’ve gone to shit! I could’ve decided to curl up in bed and complain aimlessly… But why?? Just when I was feeling as though my attitude was done for, God came in and wiped that all away. I forgot about the petty problems, and I was shown just how beautiful this world is! After all, YOU CAN’T HAVE A RAINBOW WITHOUT A LITTLE RAIN!
I believe that happiness is a choice. You wake up each and every day with a decision to make. Before you step foot out of bed, before you roll over and check your social media. You get to decide.
How will I spend today? Will I choose to be happy?
Some days are harder than others. I get it. When every little thing seems to be the end of the world, and you feel like all odds are against you… We all have those days! It’s what makes us human. While it’s not always easy to see the good in life, I believe that any day above ground is a great day! (am I right??)
Think about it. You’ve come this far! Phillipians 4:6 says, “Do not worry about anything, instead pray about everything.” For many reasons, that is my favorite verse. When we look to God for help, and reassurance, He never fails us.
So I am going to challenge YOU!! The next time you have a hard day, try looking for at least ONE thing in your life that makes you happy. Read your Bible, have a coffee break, go for a walk, anything… Take some time to really assess your situation, and be grateful.
Yes of course, being sad is always acceptable. Hell, crying can sometimes help more than anything. I just hope we can all focus on practicing gratitude, and enjoying life. Step back from the big picture, and appreciate each and every piece of the puzzle.
And above all, DON’T WORRY. BE HAPPY!
Until next time…
